Two items I picked up in the news that illustrate the reality of what Jacotot and Rancière suggest we pay close attention to--both as a celebration of humanity, and as another reason why we should broaden our understanding of human enterprise, production, construction, education

  1. poor farmers in Niger, together, discovering the usefulness of tree, the reality of the trees that were already there, what could be done with the trees, and then with their own social organization at the local level, and at the familial level.
  2. an 18 year old in Michigan building a (safe) nuclear fusion device (by himself -- but not really: think ongoing negotiations with parents, suppliers, teachers, school office, the State of Michigan ...)

BUT:

  1. the romanticism of freedom against the realism of social (political) control
