Earlier in the winter 2007, Carly Hutchinson told me that she was now working for the "Harlem Health Promotion Center" which is located in the Theresa hotel. At the time she did not know that TC had a "Gordon campus" there. I told her then we were starting a project in Harlem and that, at some point, we would contact her. When she came to visit me yesterday to talk about her exams, I asked her a few questions about the HHPC, told her about our project and that Linda would contact her for a longer interview about the work of the center, its organization and programs, and to ask for introductions to people there who might help us further. The HHPC is part of the "Mailman School of Public Health" which itself is a school of Columbia University. The funding comes partially from the Center for Disease Control. Their mission is "health promotion" (she mention HIV, pregnancy and others I did not write down [she was speaking very fast as if all this is part of a stock speech given to people who ask, as I was, for an overview]. Her particular project is one funded by a CDC grant about using technology to promote health, and particularly obesity. Hutchinson's first task is creating a web portal. She specified that this is oriented to adults rather than youths [implying a major distinction in the work of HHPC?]. As I explained that we would appreciate introduction to people who might talk to us about other programs and give us permission to get to know in more details what they are doing, she mentioned the name of her boss. She seems to think that there would be no problem in our talking to him. As I mentioned our difficulty in getting responses from churches, she mentioned that they had experienced similar problems. She gave me her card and is expecting the call from Linda. |
