As a first step, and to get a sense of whether my plan makes sense, I decided to walk north from Madison and 125th, and then west on 127th, and south on Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. Blvd, and write down and photograph all places that one would expect to have an “educational” program. It was about 11:30 am |

While taking the pictures, I am amazed [though not surprised given news reports from the past few years] the amount of construction including brownstone reconstruction, gut rehabilitation of an apartment building, construction of a new apartment building. And of course the number of very clean brownstones. [what I notice are the signs of prosperity, not poverty]
{the ubiquity of construction crews opens the questions:
. Where do they come from?
. Where do they live?
. Where did they learn whatever skills they have (including the ‘skill’ of being in the place for hiring)
. What are they learning in parallel to their working on these project? Where are they moving to?}[this being Harlem, I found myself looking for young black men and only saw a very few. I was not comfortable taking pictures–but I never am. I did not notice anyone noticing me enough to make me notice their noticing.]
