This class is open to all students by my permission, Masters as well as doctoral, whether in anthropology or in other programs.

This class is an advanced introduction to major theoretical issues in anthropology and, indeed, all the social sciences. While a background in anthropology is not required, some introduction to the social sciences is helpful, unless one is dedicated to exploring new approaches to perennial concerns.

The class may be of most interest to Masters students seriously considering a doctoral program in the social sciences, and particularly in anthropology.

The class meets with the colloquium course required of all new doctoral students in the Programs in Anthropology at Teachers College. Readings, class participation, and all other requirements are the same.

Note that, for the doctoral students, this is the first in a four course sequence. Masters students are not expected to make this commitment, though some may do so, by permission of the faculty in the Anthropology Programs.
