The course is designed to examine processes of education within families and the relation of families to other institutions that educate, with special attention to family memories.

We will address such matters as:

• education about identity (one's own, and that of others)
• education about gender
• education about health
• education about aging
• education about popular culture
• education about adult careers
• education about schooling
• etc.

We will particularly emphasize the education that people give each other as they reflect, discuss, deliberate about futures, deal with consequences, etc.

 

As John Dewey once put it “education is a process of living and not a preparation for future living.” (My Pedagogical Creed 1897)
