Typically, students will be working on the project which they designed in the first semester of this sequence (see note on prerequisite). Students who have not taken the first semester must come with a well formulated, though not necessarily finalized, sketch of a proposal (involving some review of the literature, and the formulation of some questions or puzzles deriving from this literature that were developed with an ethnographic method in mind).
The project can be understood as a "pilot" to gain experience with problems of entry, recording, analysis, and writing.
To implement this, everyone is expected to hand-in short reports on their work paralleling the concerns addressed in class discussions and referring to the readings (see below for details).
The final paper will be a report on this project. This report should have two main parts:
- a brief write-up summarizing the project;
- a brief critique of the process ("what would I do different")
Students should also be prepared to make short oral presentations of their work to date during one of the sessions given to student projects.
