List of references

Hervé Varenne

Introduction

Included here are the authors and their works that I have found useful over the years (particularly since the middle 80s when I started keeping track of my readings electronically).  I hope this is helpful to students in cultural anthropology, anthropology of the United States or Ireland, or anthropology of education--the fields to which I have contributed to most over my career. There are however serious limitations to this data base that must be taken into account.

This is not to be taken as representing "must read's."  There is much here that I barely glanced at or that I consider minor and forgetable works or even altogether dangerous. In other words, I do not necessarily endorse the works included here!

Nor is it to be taken as a bibliography of works . This is not even to be taken as a bibliography of the sub-category of works in the disciplines that reflect my current understanding. Many essential books are not included, whether because I first read them before I joined the electronic age or because I have not yet have the time to look at them. Thus, looking at this list of close to 1,500 names, I personally first notice the authors who are not there even though they should--if this were intended to guide a review of the literature in any of the fields.  I then notice other authors whose works I just happened to stumble upon and never looked at carefully.

In other words, this is offered as "references cited." It is probably most useful intellectually as a way of understanding the background to my work, what actually I am likely to have read (more or less carefully...)--though not all of it--, and what I have not...
